Advice From a CPEDC™

Advice From a CPEDC™

AAPC member Astara N. Crews, MJ, CHC, CHPC, CHIAP, CPC, CPEDC, has worked in healthcare for 25 years and is currently a senior compliance officer and HIPAA privacy and security officer for a mid-size healthcare system in New York state’s Mid-Hudson Valley and Western Connecticut regions. AAPC asked Crews about her experience with earning the Certified Pediatrics Coder (CPEDC™) credential and how it has helped her career.

What led you to obtain the CPEDC™ credential?

At one point earlier in my career, I had the privilege of working for one of the largest children’s hospitals as a billing compliance manager. It seemed only appropriate to obtain AAPC’s certification in pediatric coding.

Do you have any tips for individuals preparing for the CPEDC™ exam?

Like with any examination, proper studying is key to passing the CPEDC™ exam. I found AAPC’s tools and guides, as well as the American Academy of Pediatrics, most useful as resources.

How has the CPEDC™ credential helped you in your job/career?

Having the CPEDC™ credential sets you apart in the pediatric industry as a designated subject matter expert with the expertise and knowledge required for pediatric coding nuances. It provides a valuable skillset for anyone pursuing a career in pediatrics.

Who do you think would most benefit from the CPEDC™ credential?

Individuals looking to pursue a career in any of the pediatric settings (i.e., children’s hospitals, pediatric physician offices, health plans) would definitely benefit from the CPEDC™ credential. Pediatric billing and coding have unique nuances unlike any of the other specialties.

What resources do you use most to earn your continuing education units (CEUs)?

AAPC’s Healthcare Business Monthly magazine is not only resourceful for CEUs but also allows me to learn key elements in other aspects of healthcare. Second to the magazine, attending my local chapter meetings offers another great opportunity to obtain continuing education credits. Lastly, regional and HEALTHCON conferences are great because you can earn the most CEUs in one event, while getting a chance to network with other coders.
